In 2006: A Brain Injury
|
James Lazier of Scotchtown fell 30 feet onto a concrete floor in Brooklyn on Feb. 4, 2003, fracturing bones, battering organs and damaging his brain. An Orange County jury handed down a $15.5 million verdict against the owner of the building where Lazier was working and the company that employed him - giving Lazier some compensation for his injuries, but also sending a message about how Orange County has changed.
"Traditionally, Orange County jurors have been viewed as not being generous in their awards in personal injury cases," said Frank Zeccola of Goshen, who tried the case in state Supreme Court with his partner, John Selinger. "This is an affirmation that Orange County has advanced - we're a more sophisticated county now, a more metropolitan county, a more progressive county."

In 2005: Paralysis
|
John Praaito was paralyzed when his motorcycle was hit by an oncoming motor vehicle. This case ended with an $8 million result from Chrysler Corp.
"DaimlerChrysler Inc. will pay $8.3 million to a Chester man who was paralyzed in a car accident in 2002. John Prieto, 52, was riding his motorcycle on Lakes Road on his day off from work in New York City when he was hit by a Jeep that crossed over the dividing line in the road. The Jeep was leased from DaimlerChrysler; in New York, the civil liability in an auto case falls on the owner of the vehicle.
Prieto lived because of what his lawyer, Frank Zeccola of Goshen, called a heroic effort by Chester ambulance volunteers. But the accident left Prieto a quadriplegic. He has three children. Prieto and his wife sued DaimlerChrysler in state Supreme Court for $110 million. The settlement was signed in Goshen last week, in the courtroom of acting Supreme Court Justice Stewart Rosenwasser.
